Future Worlds Prize for Fantasy and Science Fiction Writers of Colour was founded in 2019 as The Gollancz and Rivers of London BAME Award by writer Ben Aaronovitch and publisher Gollancz. The first winner was Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson, with her novel The Principle of Moments. Esmie has since secured a publishing deal, and her book will be out in 2022.

The prize aims to discover new voices writing in the science fiction and fantasy space, and encompasses all aspects of the genre from dystopia and steampunk to space operas and horror, and many more.

Future Worlds Prize is passionate about the development of writers from ethnic minorities, and all shortlisted writers get mentoring to help them develop their work and increase their knowledge of the publishing industry.

The prize works in partnership with a number of publishers.
